Obituary

Jack Duane Lundgren, 80, of Superior, died Friday, September 26, 2014, at his residence. Jack fought a long and courageous battle with diabetes and most recently leukemia.

He was born November 21, 1933, in Superior, son of Melvin and Arline (Brown) Lundgren.

Jack enlisted in the army in 1953 and was stationed in Fort Riley, Kansas. He was in the 10th Division, Company 1, 87th Infantry, and was honorably discharged in 1955.

Upon returning to Superior, Jack had various jobs including bar tending at the Victory Bar on Tower Avenue. He then went to work for his father Mel at Mel's Transmission Shop on Ogden Avenue. Then his father moved the business to 5701 Tower Avenue, in 1965. Jack followed him there which became known as Mel's Tower Spur. Melvin retired in 1972. Jack took over the business with his brother Tom and changed the name to Jack's Fast Food, as it is presently known today. As a business owner he sponsored several softball teams, wrestling teams, stock car racing and bowling teams, which he loved to do. During his business years, Jack employed many young people and helped them in numerous ways.

Jack enjoyed watching the Packers, Badgers and Brewers, however, Green Bay was his greatest passion. He was also an avid animal lover, especially his dogs Tooie and Louie. To say Jack was an avid bowler would be an understatement. He bowled for over 60 years and probably bowled more games than anyone in Superior. His highest game was 298 and he had several 700 series. He was in many leagues including mixed leagues, and won many league championships. He also sponsored several women's teams that won many championships.

He was a loyal member of the Superior Moose Club, for many years.

Preceding him in death were his parents; sisters, Patricia Jensen and Janice Berry; and brother, Donald Lundgren.

Survivors include his brothers, James (Dorothy) Lundgren, Barnes, Wisconsin, and Thomas (Patricia) Lundgren, Superior; sister, Marilyn (James) Wickstrom, Superior; daughter, Sheryl Lind, Duluth; special friend, Betty Coyle, Superior; and several nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, October 1, 2014, at Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N. 19th Street, Superior. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.

Active pallbearers will be Jason Lundgren, Dale Lundgren, Mike Lundgren, Jim Wickstrom, Rob Berry and Mike Berry.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of his bowling team.

Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Superior, with military rites accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post # 435.

Jack was a generous and kind man and will be sadly missed by family, friends and community. We will carry him in our hearts and prayers forever.
