SUPERIOR
James D. Bartley, 73, of Superior, died Monday, November 9, 2009, at St. Luke's Hospital, Duluth.
He was born August 19, 1936 in Superior, son of Beatrice E. (Larsen) and Robert J. Bartley.
Jim served in the U.S. Air National Guard, and while stationed in Amarillo Texas, he scored the highest jet mechanic test score ever recorded at that base.
He was the owner of Bartley's Sales and Service, Inc., Superior, for over 39 years. Prior to his business ownership, he worked at Link Brothers, Superior. He also had worked as a paramedic for Douglas County Sheriff's Department.
Some of his interests included building and racing street rods, musky fishing, building model airplanes and riding his Harley Davidson motorcycles. In 2003 he was inducted into the Superior Speedway Hall of Fame.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his former wife and lifelong friend, Delores Bartley, Superior; son, Scott Bartley (Darla Mattson), Superior; daughters, Julie Bartley Kiminski (Tim McLaren), Superior, and Kim Bartley (Rob Goodland), Menomonie,Wis.; grandsons, Jacob Bartley, Ryan Bartley and Tyler Kiminski; sisters, Joan (James) Izzard, Superior, Marcia (Robert) Price, Madison, Wis., and Kathy (Albert) Preston, Waupun, Wis.; aunts, Jane Rabach and Barbara Bartley Rabach, both of Muskegon, Michigan; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N. 19th Street, Superior, and will resume at 10 until the 11 a.m. service Thursday, at Bethel Lutheran Church, Superior. Pastor Gary Garnatz will officiate.
Active pallbearers will be Shane Hickok, Darin Truchon, Stan Wolf, Tom Cannon, Mike Izzard, Brad Izzard, Roy Colborn and Tim Flynn. Honorary pallbearers will be Dan Cannon and Wayne Schuller.
Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Superior, where military rites will be accorded by the combined Thomas F. Stein VFW Post # 1091 and the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post #435.
