James C. Gunderson, 79, of Superior, died Saturday, April 08, 2017, at Twin Ports Health Services, Superior.
He was born April 20, 1937 in Superior, son of Carl and Jeannette (Peterson) Gunderson.
Jim proudly served his country with the U.S. Army as a tank driver in Germany.
On October 22, 1960, in Carlton, Minnesota, Rhoda Nasvall and James Gunderson were united in marriage.
He retired after twenty-four years as a firefighter for the city of Superior.
Some of his interests included history, golfing, rollerblading, rollerskating, ice skating, bicycling, and dancing to ballroom, swing, country and polka music. Jim loved his family and went out of his way to help them in times of need.
Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Rhoda in 1965; and daughter, Sherry Gunderson in 2002.
Survivors include his daughters, Nancy (Patrick) Gallagher, South Range, and Terry Gunderson, Arizona; grandchildren, Michelle Gallagher and Derek Gallagher; sisters, Joanne (Richard) Branzell, Reno, NV, and Carol (Roger Peterson) Johnson, Onalaska, WI; brother, Bob Gunderson, Iron River, WI; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 10 until the 11 a.m. service, Saturday, April 15, 2017, at Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N. 19 th Street, Superior. Reverend Gary Garnatz will officiate.
Burial will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at Greenwood Cemetery, Superior, with military rites accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post 435.
The family thanks the staff at Twin Ports Health Services for the wonderful care James received.
