James Karras died on Monday, May 16, at the age of 90, in his Bennett Wisconsin residence.
He was born in Chicago on February 25, 1926, to George and Helen (Bleskan) Karras. He spent his childhood on his grandparent's farm in Bennett, Wisconsin. He moved back to Chicago to finish high school and graduated in June of 1944. On July 31, 1944, Jim was drafted into the United States Army. He served with Company C, 23rd Tank Battalion. Battles and campaigns include Rhineland; Central Europe. Decorations and citations include the American Theater Ribbon, EAME Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, a Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and an Occupation Medal (Germany). Jim was honorably discharged July 3, 1946.
Jim married Katherine (Kay) Ramel on September 25, 1950. They traveled to California and Alaska, and settled in Bennett, Wisconsin. Jim was an apprentice and served for American Steel and Wire Division, United States Steel Company Duluth Works. Jim and Kay had three children, Mike, Patty (Greg Wermter), and Maryann. They had two grandchildren, Alyssa and Clyde Wermter.
Jim also enjoyed farming, raising beef cattle and fishing on the Big Lake (Lake Superior). But, most of all, he loved playing his accordion with his band, The Chaparrals (I mean, I mean, I mean).
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 25th beginning at Noon at the Mike Karras residence in Bennett, Wisconsin.
