Obituary

Jeanne E. (Knudsen) Johnson, 98, of Superior, passed away on February 24, 2019, at Villa Marina Health & Rehabilitation Center.

Jeanne was born in Superior on January 10, 1921, to Henry R.W. Knudsen and Lillian K. (Lund) Knudsen. Jeanne married Clarence 'Johnny' E. Johnson in September of 1948.

She graduated from Superior Central High School in 1937. Earned a Bachelor of Education degree from Superior State Teacher's College in 1941, a Master's Degree in Library Science at University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1942. She was a librarian at Fond du Lac High School and then taught and was librarian at Quantico Post School in Quantico, VA. Jeanne was also the supervising librarian of the 10 elementary schools in New Rochelle, NY and was on faculty as instructor of reference librarian. She also taught classes of library science and served as head cataloger at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. She organized the library and served as librarian at Vocational School (now WITC) in Superior. Jeanne was often seen on the stage for local theatrical productions in the '60s and '70s as well as acting and reciting of Erma Bombeck's writings for several organizations.

Jeanne was a founding member and Past President of Superior Memorial Hospital Auxiliary (now Essentia); member and Past President of Superior Women's Club; life member for 77 years and Past Grand Matron of the Order of Eastern Star of Wisconsin; life member of Hammond Avenue Presbyterian Church (now United Presbyterian) where she served as trustee and deacon; founding member, first woman member, and longest-serving member of the UW-Superior Foundation Board of Directors for 45 years; charter member and Past President of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter BU; Past President of Alpha Kappa Sorority of UWS; and also a member of the Continental Women's Club of Greater Fort Myers, the Superior Area Retired Educators Association, Friends of the Superior Public Library and Superior Public Museums.

Jeanne was preceded in death by her parents and husband. She is survived by her two sons, James R. (Jan) Johnson, and Joel W. (Joy) Johnson; as well as six grandchildren, Christian (Kelly) Johnson, Nathan (Sarah) Johnson, Jeremiah Johnson, Johanna (Josh) Halonen, Jamie Johnson and Jodie (Mike) Dahl; and seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Visitation will be on Saturday, March 2 from 3:00 until the 4:00 memorial service at United Presbyterian Church in Superior. Rev. Charlotte Frantz will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to: Henry R. W. Knudsen Scholarship at UW-Superior; United Presbyterian Church, Order of Eastern Star, AAD Shrine, or Charity of donor's choice.
