Obituary

Jerry Lewis Costley, 78, of Superior, died Friday, January 1, 2021 at his residence, surrounded by his family.

He was born September 4, 1942 in Memphis, TN, son of Raymond and Sadie (Hawkins) Costley.

Jerry proudly served his country with the U.S. Air Force, as a jet engine mechanic.

On April 13, 1968 in Memphis, TN, Jerry Lewis Costley and Patricia A. Kangas were united in marriage.

Following his 4 years with the military, he became a union electrician and worked most of his career with Benson Electric as a member of I.B.E.W. #242. He worked on numerous ships of the Great Lakes, and sometimes would travel on board to solve electrical problems. His career also included the major renovation of the Duluth aerial lift bridge and construction of Black Bear Casino.

Jerry enjoyed golfing, especially at Grandview Golf Course near Proctor, MN. Many years ago, Jerry drove stock cars at the Proctor Raceway. He was an avid NASCAR fan, and for his 70 th birthday, drove one of the NASCAR cars in Chicago, IL. Some of his other interests included woodworking, photography, painting and gardening.

Preceding him in death were his parents.

Survivors include his wife of over 52 years, Patricia; children, Randy (Sue) Costley, Duluth, Sandy Hoven, Superior, and Brenda (Grant) Sjoberg, Cumberland, WI; 7 grandchildren, Kristin Costley, Matthew (Morgan) Costley, Mark (Jamie) Helm, Nichole (Tyler) Hoven, Jeremy Ruiz, Nick Sjoberg and Drake Sjoberg; 8 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Betty (Lloyd) Dills, Seattle, WA, and Lisa (David) Higdon, Olive Branch, MS; brother, Tommy (Bobbie) Costley, Southaven, TN; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held this summer at the Salo Cemetery, Lawler, MN.
