Joana M. Heinen, 78 of Duluth died in her home with her family by her side Wednesday, December 31, 2024.
Joana was born on February 16, 1946, in Duluth, MN, to Nicholas and Theresa (Schaeffer) Kroll.
She grew up on a farm in Wrenshall, where her experiences with animals sparked a lifelong love and compassion for them. Her upbringing in the rural countryside cultivated her caring nature, and her dedication to her studies led her to become the valedictorian of Wrenshall High School in 1964.
Joana's unique blend of intelligence and warmth defined her personality, making her both loving and intellectually gifted. She channeled this compassion into her work as a nursing aide, a role that required immense empathy and dedication.
Joana was also incredibly hardworking and deeply loved her children and grandchildren, always putting their needs before her own.
Her selflessness and dedication to her family were a testament to her unwavering love and commitment. In addition, Joana had a passion for reinventing her home and yard, transforming them like a caterpillar into a butterfly.
Her creativity and dedication to creating beautiful spaces were just another reflection of her vibrant spirit. She was as beautiful as she was kind, and her kindness touched everyone she met.
Joana will always be remembered in the hearts of many, leaving behind a legacy of love, compassion, and beauty.
Joana was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Ernest Kroll, Larry Kroll, and Mary Kroll; her grandson Paul Heinen and her son in-law, Jeffrey Michaud.
Survivors include her children, Sandra Michaud, and Allen Heinen; her grandchildren, Ryan Heinen, Kyle Heinen, and Alicia (Steven) Kavajecz; her care giver, Steven Broiher, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 am until the 11:00 am funeral service on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at Downs Life Celebration Center, 1902 N. 34th Street, Superior, WI.
Interment will be in Oneota Cemetery following the service.
