Joanne Marie Osterlund, 70, passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side on June 16, 2026, at Essentia St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth. Born on July 2, 1955, in Duluth to Helen (Laine) and Isadore Mikrot, Joanne lived a life filled with love, laughter, compassion, and devotion to family. She married the love of her life, Daniel Osterlund, and together they shared more than 50 years of marriage. Through life’s joys and challenges, they built a home centered on love, loyalty, family traditions, and countless cherished memories. Daniel was her “knight in shining armor,” and their enduring partnership was a testament to unwavering commitment and friendship.
Joanne had a special gift for connecting with children and animals. Children were naturally drawn to her warm heart, playful spirit, and sense of humor. She delighted in making them laugh, listening to their stories, and creating memories they would carry with them throughout their lives. Her love for animals was equally profound. She adored all creatures but held a special affection for her beloved German Shepherds, treasured cockatiels, and cherished kitties, whose companionship brought her comfort, happiness, and endless joy. She also found great pleasure in feeding and caring for the wildlife around her home. Her kindness extended to every living thing she encountered.
Known for her vibrant personality, Joanne embraced life with enthusiasm and individuality. She enjoyed playing board games, attending concerts, listening to 1980s rock music, and relaxing beneath her palm trees with a good book. She was rarely seen without her signature stiletto heels and spiked bracelets, reflecting the confidence and unique style that made her unforgettable.
Those who knew Joanne will remember her infectious laughter, quick wit, generous heart, and ability to brighten any room. She had a remarkable talent for making people feel welcome and loved. Family and friends often heard her favorite words of encouragement: “Do something that makes you laugh today.” It was advice she lived by and shared freely with those around her.
Joanne was preceded in death by her parents, Helen and Isadore Mikrot; her beloved sister, Jeanne L. Greely; her cherished niece, Jessica Greely; her nephew, Andrew (“Andy”) Mikrot; and her mother-in-law, Ruby Hesselgrave-Embertson. Each held a special place in Joanne’s heart, and the bonds they shared remained an enduring part of her life and family story.
She is survived by her devoted husband of more than 50 years, Daniel Osterlund; her daughters, Danie Osterlund and Misty Osterlund; her grandchildren, Alexis, Lacey, Samarah, and Colten Osterlund; her brother, Richard Mikrot; and many extended family members, dear friends, children, and animals whose lives were touched by her kindness and love.
Though Joanne’s presence will be deeply missed, her laughter, compassion, strength, and unwavering love for family, children, and animals will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
“Do something that makes you laugh today.”
