John P. "Jack" Bellino, 90, of Superior, died Friday, May 14, 2010, at Villa-Marina Health and Rehabilitation Center, Superior.
He was born January 26, 1920 in Superior, son of Frank and Leona (Meysman) Bellino.
On October 7, 1941, John P. Bellino and Lucille M. Schibret were united in marriage.
Jack worked as a track welder for the Great Northern Railroad from 1937 until his 1943 enlistment in the U.S. Army. He served in the South Pacific Theatre until his honorable discharge in 1945. He returned to Superior and resumed his employment with the railroad. Jack retired from the railroad in 1961, at which time he and two friends opened the Village Lanes in the village of Superior. He retired in 1984 and spent the next 20 years wintering in the south.
His memberships included Holy Assumption Catholic Church, life member of Thomas F. Stein VFW Post # 1091, Richard I. Bong American Legion Post # 435, life member of Cooties Pup Tent # 2, Knights of Columbus 3rd Degree Council # 7106, and Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Assembly # 1208.
Some of his interests included hunting, fishing, gardening and playing cards, dancing and traveling throughout the world. His greatest interest, however, was spending time with his family.
Preceding him in death were his parents; grandson, David Bellino; sister, Frances Kruger; and brother, Eugene Bellino.
Survivors include his wife of over 68 years, Lucille; son, Richard F. (Barbara) Bellino, Sr., Superior; granddaughter, Kimberly (Jon) Ruikka, Lexington, MN; grandson, Richard F. Bellino, Jr., Two Harbors, MN; 7 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N. 19th Street, Superior, and will resume at 9:30 until the 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial, Thursday, at Holy Assumption Catholic Church, Superior. Reverend Father James Tobolski will be the celebrant.
Pallbearers will be Richard Bellino, Jr., Phillip Bellino, Ryan Bellino, Dennis Cochrane, Ken Reed and Rand Lally.
Burial with military rites accorded by VFW and American Legion posts from Duluth and Superior will be at Calvary Cemetery, Superior.
Following the committal service, everyone is invited back to the church for a luncheon.
