Obituary

John C. Haugland, 85, of Superior, Wis. left his pain behind on Thurs., Mar. 19th in Essentia Health-St. Mary's Hospital, Superior.

He was born in Superior on Nov. 29, 1929 to Molly K. (Haugen) and Christ R. Haugland. John graduated from Central High School in 1947 and went on to receive a BS Degree from Wisconsin State University-Superior in 1954; postgrad from U. Of Wis. in 1955; a Master's Degree in 1958; and a PhD Degree from the University of Minnesota-Minneapolis in 1961. He also received a Post Doctoral Degree from the University of Maryland on a Ford Foundation grant.
John is the Emeritus Vice Chancellor of UWS where he began his journey in kindergarten in 1934.

He proudly served his country during the Korean War in the U. S. Army from Aug. 1948 until Aug. 1951.

On Sept. 23, 1950 he and Joan C. Palm were united in marriage in Superior.

He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church (formerly Hammond Ave. Presbyterian Church) and also a member of the Superior Elks Lodge No. 403. He served on several local boards including the Superior City Council from 1971 until 1973; the YMCA Board of Directors, President; the Catholic Charities Bureau Board of Directors, President; the Superior United Way Board of Directors; the Superior Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and served as their President in 1976/1977; and also on the Duluth-Superior Area Educational Television Corp. (WDSE TV) Board of Trustees.

John is survived by his wife of 64 1/2 years, Joan; a daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Terry Rogstad of Forest Lake, Minn.; four grandchildren, Tyler Rogstad of Dhaka, Bangladesh, Ariel Neu (Tyler) of St. Cloud, Minn., and Kelly and Britt Haugland of Denver, Colo.; a daughter-in-law, Cindy Haugland also of Denver; four great-grandchildren, Terra, Avery and Maple Rogstad of Bangladesh and Aurora Neu of St. Cloud, Minn.; a sister, Samuline Haugland of Minneapolis, Minn.; and many loving nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Gregg J. Haugland; and a brother, First Lt. Paul L. Haugland.

John's family would like to thank all of the wonderful nurses and doctors who gave him such loving care in his hour of need.
Visitation will be Thurs., Mar. 26th from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. memorial service in the United Presbyterian Church with Rev. Joel Huenemann officiating. Military Honors will be accorded by the American Legion Richard I. Bong Post No. 435 at the Church following the service. Inurnment will take place at Greenwood Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in John's name may be made to the UW-Superior Foundation or the United Presbyterian Church.
