John Keith Lukovsky, 74, died in his sleep Sunday, July 11 in his apartment at Keystone Bluffs in Duluth. Born in Duluth on May 2, 1936, he and his twin brother, Joseph, were the youngest children of Nicholas and Sophie Lukovsky. He grew up in Gary, where his family lived, and graduated from Morgan Park High School. After graduation he worked in the steel mill, just like his father, and served in the Duluth Air National Guard. He met June Moe Cook of Superior and they married on Feb. 6, 1960. They moved to St. Louis, MO while John attended and graduated from Logan Basic Chiropractic College, and then returned to Superior. He worked in the chiropractic offices of his brothers before taking a position with Lakehead Pipeline, where he was employed until his retirement. John comfortably settled into his life and partnership with June. He played some golf, and took his rod and tackle out of the garage for a little fishing, but he and June most enjoyed entertaining friends, family, and neighbors and raising their children together. More of listener than a talker, he was still always ready with an adage or quip to keep conversation light or humorous. His most important "career" choice followed retirement, when he eventually became a full-time caregiver, as well as companion, to his wife. He sat by her side every day until her death on July 4, 2007, which he called her day of "liberation." After that, John's own health declined, and he moved to the Keystone Bluffs Assisted Living community. While there, John still stored his two accordions in the closet, listened to his polka music, received his Elks Club magazine, and made his "annual" beef jerky. John was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, his twin brother Joseph, a baby sister Marie, his brother Walt who served as a US Army Ranger in WWII, and a granddaughter, Harley. He is survived by his children, Keith (Jennifer) Lukovsky of Littleton, CO, Janie (Michael) Larva of Wrenshall, MN, and Linda (Gus) Tiboris, of Sheboygan, WI; grandchildren Michael (Melanie), Deno and Kallie Tiboris, Ashley Bender, Austin Larva, and Jack, Ty, and Nick Fontaine; his sister Olga Milosevich of Minneapolis, and Genevieve (Walt) Zivkovich of Orlando, FL; his brothers, Alexander (Olga) Lukovsky, Connie Lukovsky, Dr. George Lukovsky, and Dr. Pete (Darlene) Lukovsky, all of Duluth, and many nephews and nieces. Many special friends continued to visit, his neighborhood "grandchildren" Micah (Patricia) Niebauer and Rachel (Brandon) Johnson remembered every occasion, and John appreciated each visit and greeting card. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Keystone Bluffs, who made him feel at home there, to the St. Mary's Hospice Nurses and Nurses Who Care who made his last few weeks as comfortable as possible, and to Dr. Paul Sanford who cared for both John and June for many years. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to the 4:30 p.m. service, Saturday July 17, 2010 at First Evangelical Covenant Church, 3311 Hammond Avenue, Superior. Pastor Stephen and Dolores Staurseth will officiate. A memorial fund will be established in John's name. Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N. 19th Street, Superior, is assisting the family with arrangements.
