John W. McLaughlin, 79, of Superior, died Sunday November 15, 2020 at Villa-Marina Health and Rehabilitation Center, Superior.

He was born July 26, 1941 in Ringsted, Iowa, son of James Richard McLaughlin and Bertha Nason McLaughlin.

John proudly served his country with the Marines from 1960 to 1966, and with the Army National Guard from 1974 to 1992.

On April 13, 1974, John W. McLaughlin and Judy L. Johnston were united in marriage.

John retired as a detective in May, 1994 from the Superior Police Department, after 28 years of service.

After his retirement, John especially enjoyed his afternoon naps and walks with his favorite buddy, Shadow. Some of his other interests were reading and watching military movies.

John was a member of the Elks #403, T.R.E.A., W.P.P.A., Superior Municipal Employees Credit Union board of directors, and the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwa.

Preceding him in death were his parents and foster parents; and brother, Joe McLaughlin.

Survivors include his wife of over 46 years, Judy; daughters, Shannon McLaughlin (Shannon Wegleitner), and Melissa McLaughlin; sons, Gregory J. McLaughlin (Melissa), and John L. McLaughlin (Laura DeFoe); grandchildren, Lauren, Tyler and Brady; brothers, James and Donald; sisters, Mary, Judith and Marlys; and foster siblings, Rob, Rick, Elizabeth and Tim.

A celebration of John's life will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday May 1, 2021 at Shamrock Pizza, Superior.

A private graveside service with military honors will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Superior.
