John Charles Waint, 92, a lifelong Superior, Wis. resident, died Friday, Sept. 12, 2014 at Villa-Marina Health & Rehabilitation Center.
He was born Apr. 8, 1922 to Mayme Cushaw and John P. Waint.
Following high school graduation he worked with the men of Company 3663 of the Civilian Conservation Corps at Camp Pattison (Pattison State Park) transforming this wild area into one of the finest Wisconsin state parks. Some of the work the men did was cutting brush, constructing stone steps, building trails to the bottom of the gorge, erecting safety railings overlooking the falls, and the construction of several major buildings.
John served his country in the Army during WWII and was stationed in North Africa. Following his discharge he was employed as a Great Lakes sailor. John began his career as an officer on the Superior Police Department in 1951, retiring in 1978 at the rank of Captain. During his tenure, he had the opportunity to serve as a motorcycle policeman, which he thoroughly enjoyed. In addition to playing hockey for the Superior Police team he also spent many years coaching youth hockey for the Superior Amateur Hockey Association. He also enjoyed his part-time employment at Sammy's Pizza parlor.
He was a member of the V. F. W., American Legion, B. P. O. E. Lodge No. 133, and the Moose Lodge.
Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Nannette and Tim Sauter of Superior; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Laurie Waint of Jefferson City, MO; grandchildren, Ryan (Sara) Sauter, Neil Sauter, Adam Sauter, Ashley (Matthew) Struttmann, Taryn (Jonathan) Shih and Leighton (Gregory) Caplinger; and two great-granddaughters, Tenley and Stella Sauter.
John was preceded in death by his wife, the former Lynnette Burzynski; and two sisters, Marie and Lucille.
If desired, memorials in John's name may be made to the Superior Amateur Hockey Association or
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
His memorial service will be Saturday, September 20th at 12:00 Noon in Downs Funeral Home, corner of Ogden Ave. & 19th St., with visitation beginning at 11:00 A.M. The Superior Police Department Honor Guard will be in attendance. Reverend Father Andrew Ricci of Superior Cathedral will officiate. A private inurnment will take place at Graceland Cemetery.
