Obituary

Judith Ann (Wallgren, Anderson) Phillips, 82, of Superior, WI, passed away Friday, May 14, 2021 at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth.

Judith was born in Superior on September 10, 1938 to Lee and Minnie (Witzig) Phillips.

Judie was a devoted mother and grandmother. She pursued her many hobbies and interests with passionate enthusiasm. She owned and operated Manitou K9 Grooming shop, starting out in her basement and eventually opening a shop in South Superior. She attended the University of Wisconsin, Superior from 1956-57 and was a member of Delta Sigma sorority. After raising her family and growing her business, she returned to college and in 1994 graduated magna cum laude with a BFA in visual arts. Although she was over 50 at the time, she approached her college experience with curiosity and open-mindedness.

Judie was an avid dog sled racer, fielding a 5 to 7 dog team at numerous races throughout the tri-state region. She served on the board of Head of the Lakes Sled Dog Association. She also attended dog obedience, breed, and agility classes with her beloved dogs. She volunteered in various capacities to support local kennel clubs and animal service organizations.

Judie continued to work on painting and drawing, as well as sculpture and ceramic art. Her work was displayed in several local galleries and other venues including a solo show at the Duluth Institute of Arts that showcased her dog sled themed paintings.

Judie treasured and maintained friendships in many circles: high school classmates, sorority sisters, artists, dog lovers, neighbors, and swimming classmates. Most important she loved and is proud of her children and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; former husband, John 'Jack' Wallgren; son-in-law, Tom Holte.

Judie is survived by her children, Malinda 'Mindy' Holte, Gordon (Sandra) Wallgren, Donald (Susan) Wallgren, and Tracy (Michael) Middleton; grandchildren, Jacklin Wallgren, Curtis (Ana Knickerbocker) Wallgren, Alexandra Wallgren, Josephine Wallgren, and Mollie Middleton; sister, Barbara Gustafson; and many nieces and nephews.

A private family graveside service will be held at Greenwood Cemetery in Superior. A Celebration of Judie's Life will be announced at a later date.
