Kenneth 'Putta' W. Olson, 75, lifelong North End resident of Superior, died Thursday, June 18, 2015 at Essentia Health-Miller Dwan Medical Center in Duluth.
Kenneth was born in Superior on Aug 29, 1939 the son of Roy and Irene Olson. He graduated from Superior Central High School with the class of 1957. He married the former Mary Jo Eastman on Feb. 24, 1961.
Putta sailed on the Great Lakes with the Steinbrenner fleet and worked at Fraser Shipyard for six years. He also worked for the Huron/Lafarge Cement Plant for 34 years. Putta and Mary Jo also owned and operated the Locker Room Bar & Grill for 16 years.
He was a youth basketball coach for 16 years at Ericsson School, the Salvation Army and the Superior Basketball Association. He also coached woman's softball for 25 years. He was a longtime supporter of UW-Superior and Superior High School athletics. He was a St. Mary's Hospital volunteer and was on the Pilgrim Lutheran Church Council. He also served on the Superior City Council and the Superior School Board.
His greatest enjoyment was watching his grandchildren in all their activities.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Robert and Melvin Olson; a sister, Barbara Jean Amorde; and an aunt, Gladys Rouillard.
Putta is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Jo; three sons, Kenny (Shannon) of Superior, Billy (Cindy Schlafmann) of Andover, MN, and Bernie (Dawn) of Superior; grandchildren, Taylor, Emily, Addie, Evan, Casey, Cory, Erika and Lyvia; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be on Tues. June 23 from 5-7 p.m. at Downs Funeral Home, corner of 19th St. and Ogden Ave. Visitation will continue on Wed. June 24 at Pilgrim Lutheran Church form 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral Service. Rev. Will Mowchan will officiate. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be his eight grandchildren.
Honorary pallbearers will be Greg Campbell, Bob DeMeyer, Roger Plachta, Steve Rae and Richie Fisher.
