LeRoy Clifford Berg Sr, of Superior, Wisconsin, beloved husband of Gloria Berg for 51years, passed away peacefully at the age of 88, surrounded by loved ones Oct. 18, 2012. Leroy was born on Feb. 20, 1924.
He was predeceased by his parents, Albert and Lida Berg; brother, Clifford; sisters, Florence Brown, Doris Erdman, Helen Berg, Eleanor Anderson, Fern Sommerville and Faith Solin; and an uncle, Carl Peterson.
LeRoy was born in Superior where he lived most of his life. He graduated from Superior Central High School. He joined the Air Force in 1942 to serve in England as a diesel mechanic for the 8th Air Force. He worked on the plane that the actor Jimmie Stewart flew in England. LeRoy and Gloria attended several Air force conventions in England and the United States.
He worked for the Burlington Northern Rail Road for 42 years. He also steamed ore at the Allouez Ore docks in the winter. LeRoy was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 847. He served as the VFW post commander twice and served on its color guard for many years. He was a member of the Burlington Northern employees club, served as a rifle instructor at the VFW for Superior's youth. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW Cooties. LeRoy loved to play baseball and bowl. He formed his baseball team in Brule that played for many years. He also enjoyed playing golf and enjoyed fishing.
Along with his wife Gloria, LeRoy is survived by his eight children and their spouses, sons, Leroy "Skip" (Jackie) Berg Jr., Larry (Susan) Berg, Carl Berg (Julie Devalue), Harold "Harry" Berg; daughters, Sandra (Lloyd) Skustad, Lorraine Cummings, Leslie Berg and Janis (Eddie Joe) Davis; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and a great grandchild on the way.
Visitation will be on Wednesday Oct. 24th from 4pm to 7pm at Downs Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held Thursday, Oct. 25th at 11:00 am at the Pilgrim Lutheran Church. Rev. Sarah L. Kerkes will officiate. Military Honors will be accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post#435 at Soldiers Square in Greenwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be the following grandsons, Lee Lorimor, Chris Vendela, Eric Berg, Shawn Cummings, Cody Berg, Bruce Lorimor, and Ryan Berg.
The family would like to thank St. Francis Nursing Home for the care they gave LeRoy during his stay there. They did a great job in making LeRoy's last days more comfortable.
LeRoy had a positive outlook on life and always found a way to get others to laugh and look at life a little better. He will be missed.
