Leslie E.
Schumacher
June 9, 1931 – August 5, 2024
Leslie E. Schumacher, 93, lifetime resident of Superior, Wisconsin, went home to be with the Lord and reunite with his beloved wife, Beverly, on Monday, August 5th, 2024.
Les was born on June 9th, 1931, in Superior. He was the son of Anna (Richards) and Fred Schumacher. He graduated from Central High School in Superior.
Les met the love of his life, Beverly Ann VanHorn, at a dance hall in Superior, when he was just 17 years old. Les would walk from Billings Park to North End nearly every day to see her. They united in marriage on December 25th, 1952, and he spent almost 70 years by her side before she went home to be with the Lord.
In his early years, his main hobbies were boxing, race car driving, and taking Bev out dancing every Saturday night.
Les had a work ethic that was unmatched by most. He primarily worked as a Yardmaster for BNSF but for many years he worked 3 jobs at a time to provide for his family. Over time, he purchased multiple rental properties. If you couldn't find him working on the railroad, you could find him working on those. Born into a family of 12, he was one of the oldest and knew what it was like to go without. He worked his way from the ground up, building a beautiful legacy and home for his wife, children, and grandchildren.
He loved to tell stories of working on the railroad to his children. He also loved to tell jokes but would often times laugh so hard at his own jokes that no one could understand what he was saying. For the recipients, it wasn't the joke that was funny, it was watching how hard he laughed at his own stories.
Les' favorite hobbies were going for coffee every day with Bev, spending time at the lake, and going to prayer twice a week. He also loved to go to auctions and he could never pass up anything that was a good buy. Even if he didn't need it, someone else might. He had his family take him to Saver's every Tuesday because it was Senior discount day!
He lived by example in strength and character. He blessed so many and was a true treasure to his loved ones. He taught his children to love the Lord, to be kind to others, to be hardworking, and to be generous and giving. He shared his faith to anyone that he had even just a short conversation with. Anyone who knew him was blessed.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Beverly; siblings, Beatrice, Carol, Carl, Margaret, and Gilbert.
Survivors include his children, Cathleen (Gary) LaPorte, Brian (Lisa) Schumacher, and Wendy (Roger) Lundquist; 15 grandchildren; 43 great grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; and siblings, Noreen Schumacher, Bernice Hutchinson, Delwin Schumacher, Robert (Susan) Schumacher, and Dale Schumacher.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 10th at Central Assembly of God Church, 3000 Hammond Ave., Superior, with Pastor Scott Forsberg officiating.
Leslie & Beverly's family would like to thank the staff of Elysian Senior Living, Essentia Health Hospice, and their Hospice nurse, Jeannie, for their compassionate care of their father and mother during their last days. And thank you, Jeannie, for telling dad, "Les, you can use Listerine on whatever you want."
