December 10, 1927 – March 19, 2019
A lifelong resident of Superior, WI, Lois was born on December 10, 1927 and died March 19, 2019, at Villa Marina Health and Rehab in Superior.
She was born to Lawrence M. and Inez McLaughlin Hagen the oldest of nine children.
Lois graduated from East High School in 1945. Her first job was at Superior Iron Works/Lidgerwood Mundy from 1945 to 1948.
She married Francis J. Smith on January 10, 1948, at the former First United Methodist Church parsonage in East End. They raised 5 children and were married for 26 years, until her husband's death in 1974. She was a busy stay at home mom for 17 years.
From 1965 until retiring in 1993, she was a secretary with the Superior School District at Central and East Junior High Schools. She loved working at the schools, made many dear friends with other staff members and was a wonderful mentor to the students.
Lois was a faithful and active member of the First United Methodist Church for over 50 years and an associate member at Zion Lutheran Church following the closing of the Methodist church. Lois was a secretary union rep, enjoyed 55 plus years with the Merry Mates Homemakers Club, various church groups, the Red Hats, the Lois club, retired secretary luncheon group, and the Superior Singers. Her other interests were crafts, word puzzles, reading, gardening, traveling, collecting angels and bears, walking and swim exercise classes. Her love of family and friends was most important, as was helping others.
Lois was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother Lawrence "Buzzy" Hagen, sister Nancy and her husband James Baker, sister Marlene Hagen, and daughter-in-law Marcia Anderson Smith.
She is survived by her children and their spouses: Linda and Gerald Williams, Superior; Mark and Cathy Smith, Goodland, MN; Gail and Dale Johnson, Kennewick, WA; Gary and Carmen Smith, Ewa Beach, HI; David and Sherry Smith, St. Paul, MN. Brothers: Gene and wife Barbara Hagen; Bruce and wife Lois Hagen. Sisters: Lillis and husband Lloyd Murray; Joan and husband Charles Everson; Marcia and husband Bob Bliss. Grandchildren: Jay, Todd and Andrea Williams, Christa Williams-Clements, Wayne, Bradley, Jenna, McChesney, and Ameer Smith, Wendy Baretto, Matthew, Jennifer, and Benjamin Johnson. She is also survived by fourteen great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Visitation will be on Saturday, March 30, from 10:30 a.m. until the 12:00 noon service at Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N 19 th Street, Superior. Gary Banker will officiate.
Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery this Spring.
Memorial donations may be made to the Lois I. Smith Scholarship at Superior Senior High School or Faith United Methodist Food Shelf, Superior.
