Obituary

Marina Southwick, 86, formerly of South Range, died Friday, January 17, 2014, at Solvay Hospice House, Duluth surrounded by her family. She was born June 14, 1927, in Lodz, Poland, daughter of Voldemar and Ella (Ahrens) Stolarow.

Knowing four languages - Polish, Russian, German and English, she worked as an interpreter during WWII. After marrying Clyde Southwick at the age of twenty-one in Frankfurt, Germany, Marina and Clyde returned to the United States. They lived in South Range for over 50 years. She worked 27 years as an assistant manager for J.J. Newberry Co., Superior, and then 23 years for K-Mart as a merchandiser and check-out clerk.

Even though she personally witnessed the brutality of war, she always lived with a very positive demeanor and outlook on life. She enjoyed telling stories, sewing, languages, animals and birds. Given her years of living overseas she was keenly interested in both world and national events. She was also an avid reader with a natural thirst for learning.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clyde L. Southwick, in 2008; and brother, Alexander Stolarow, sister-in-law, Hedy Stolarow and sister-in-law, Gem Peltzer.

Survivors include her nieces, Marlene Anderson, Superior, and Anita Stolarow(Denny Clements), Washington, DC, brother-in-law Charles Southwick Superior, nephews, Alex Stolarow, Folsom, CA, and Lloyd Peltzer and Bob Mosca Conifer, CO; grandnieces and grandnephews, Carolyn and Mickey Brand, Nancy Anderson, Tom and Beth Anderson, and Zachary and Nicholas Stolarow.

Visitation will from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, January 24, 2014, at the Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N. 19th Street, Superior. The visitation will resume at 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service Saturday January 25th, at the funeral home, with Reverend Gary Garnatz officiating. Inurnment will be at Summit Cemetery, Town of Summit, WI, at a later date.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Salvation Army of Superior or the Lighthouse for the Blind.
