Obituary

Marjorie 'Marge' Anne Rutan, 92, of Superior, died peacefully on Friday May 22, 2020 at Superior Rehabilitation Center.

Marjorie was born in December 1927 on a farm in Morgan County Ohio, to Frank and Belva Carr.  She graduated top of her high school class, and also graduated with top honors from Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in English and Spanish and later received a Masters degree in Education from University of Illinois Champaign/Urbana.  She did postgraduate studies in Spanish Literature at the University of Valencia, Spain.

She married Harold D. Rutan in 1950. She started teaching high school English and Spanish when she was 19 years of age. After moving to Superior, WI., in 1960, where her husband 'Hal' began a professorship at the University of Wisconsin in Superior, she taught high school in Esko, MN.  Marjorie then taught over 35 years in Superior at Central and Superior High Schools.   Her many students remember her as a kind, patient, and good-humored teacher who encouraged her students to pursue their goals.

In addition to her linguistic talents, she won a blue ribbon for her famous Crab Apple Jelly at the Ohio State fair. She was highly accomplished at quilt making and sewing and won medals at quilting showcase events. She was witty and good natured at all times, was passionate about gardening, and was an active and a lifetime member of the Bay Gardeners.

She was a world traveler and spent time working in Korea as a teacher, as well as spending time in Taiwan, Spain, England, Europe, and South America to name but a few.

She is preceded in death by her parents and husband, Harold D Rutan Jr.

Marjorie is survived by her two sisters, Jean Carr and Jenny Benson; son, Duane and his wife Paula; granddaughter, Valerie and step-grandson Nathan; and step-great-grandson, Theodore.
