Obituary

Martha A. Johnson, 94, formerly of Gordon and Superior, died Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born November 27, 1915 in Lisbon, N.D., daughter of Lars and Annie Evanger.

Her work history included waitressing at the former Gitchinadji Club and Androy Hotel, both of Superior, during WWII she was a welder at the shipyards in Superior, owner and operator of the St. Croix Café of Gordon, and retired from Jeno's.

Martha was a former member of the VFW Auxiliary and Lady Trainmen.

Her hobbies included bowling in both Superior and Gordon bowling leagues, crocheting, gardening and traveling.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Russell Johnson; 2 sisters; 9 brothers; and brother-in-law, Raymond Johnson.

Survivors include her son, LeRoy (Bessie) Johnson, Sr., Gordon; daughter, Sandra Podgorak, Gordon; 10 grandchildren, LeRoy (Julie) Johnson, Jr., Susie (Paul) Mattson, Georgie (Eric) Oleson, William (Angela) Johnson, Leslie (Doyle) Brown, Jenny (Greg) Downs, Jim Swanson, Mickie (Shawn) Harwick, Sarah Podgorak and Tim Lucius; 25 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 10 until the 11 a.m. service, Saturday, May 29, 2010 at Gordon Presbyterian Church, Gordon, WI, with Reverend Richard Blood officiating.

Burial will be in the Gordon Memorial Cemetery, Gordon.

Honorary pallbearers will be LeRoy Johnson, Jr., Jim Swanson and William Johnson. Active pallbearers will be Greg Downs, Shawn Harwick, Doyle Brown, Paul Mattson, Eric Oleson and Paul Garrity.

Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N. 19th Street, Superior, is assisting the family with arrangements.
