Marvin W. Hickok, 64, of Superior, died unexpectedly at his home, Sunday, February 21, 2010.
He was born December 12, 1945 in Superior, son of Wilfred "Bill" and LaVerne (Folz) Hickok.
Marv graduated from Superior Central High School in 1964. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout, and it was an honor he carried with him through all he accomplished in life.
His military service included the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968, and later with the Air National Guard 148th Fighter Wing, Duluth, Minnesota, from 1978 until his retirement from military service in 1997.
Marv's work history included 38 years as a clerk for the U.S. Postal Service in both Superior and Duluth, before retiring in October, 2003.
He was devoted to his beloved wife and soul mate, Wendy (Arneson), with whom he would have celebrated 40 years of marriage this August. They lived every moment together, with great love for each other and for family, especially their two children, Shannon and Shane.
Marv loved to travel and made a point to show his family his favorite parts of the country, especially the mountains of Colorado, pointing out the "vistas!" every time he turned the corner.
When Marv found something he loved, he was fully committed to going above and beyond, whether it was at the Elk's Club where he was Officer of the Year and Elk of the Year (twice), volunteering to drive vets down to Minneapolis several times a week for the Twin Ports VA Clinic and the Douglas County Veteran's Office, fishing every day at his secret spots on the St. Louis River, faithfully rooting on the Chicago Cubs each year, and most recently at Bentleyville where he gave countless hours setting up the holiday light display and proudly wore the Rudolph costume nearly five nights a week from Thanksgiving to Christmas.
He was known by many nicknames in his life – Snooky, Kirk, Mick, Rudy, Johnny and Chickenhawk. Marv's positive energy and robust love of life touched the lives of so many people, and they are forever changed because of him.
Preceding him in death were his father, Bill; brothers, Harold and Vyron; father-in-law, Leonard Arneson; and sisters-in-law, Cindy and Jan Arneson.
Survivors include his loving wife, Wendy, Superior; daughter, Shannon (Michael) Cousino, Duluth; son, Shane Hickok, Superior; mother, LaVerne Hickok, Superior; brothers, Irv Hickok, Texas, Harvey (Donna) Hickok, and Harley (Lila) Hickok, both of Superior; sister, Lynn (Lenny) Johnson, Superior; mother-in-law, Patricia Arneson, Superior; sisters-in-law, Mindy (Gary) Trebil, Duluth, and Julie (Jeff) Hill, Blaine, Minnesota; brother-in-law, Jaime (Mindy) Arneson, Superior; several nieces, nephews, and countless friends; and granddog, Bear.
The visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, February 25, 2010, with an Elks Memorial Service at 6:30 p.m., at Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N. 19th Street, Superior.
