Obituary

Mary Josephine Ely, 83, of Superior Wisconsin, died on May 4th, 2026, with her loving family by her side. Mary was born on August 14, 1943, to Anthony and Jean Szewcik of Superior WI. Mary was a lifelong resident. She married Sidney I. Ely on January 5th, 1962.

Mary worked at Parkland Health Facility for many years, but the job she enjoyed the most was being a foster grandparent for the Superior public schools. She talked about the children and how happy they made her. She kept EVERYTHING they made for her and could tell who gave it to her and the story behind it. Mary enjoyed traveling, playing cards and was a very good pool player. Her biggest love was her family, she always enjoyed family gatherings. She always had a smile on her face and could whip up something to eat whenever family came by.

She was preceded in death by her parents Jean and Anthony Szewcik, husband Sidney, and children Anthony Jean, and Katherine, Great grandchild Killian Ely Sarratt, Siblings Bonnie Schroeder, Katherine Szewcik, Michelle Szewcik, Tony Szewcik, William Szewcik, and David Szewcik. Also, her best friend and sister-in-law Gloria Lemke.

Mary is survived by her son Sidney (Candi) Ely, Denver Colorado. Daughter's Mary (Chip) Lowe, Bel Alton Maryland and Joy Ely, Dothan, Alabama. Her grandchildren Kevin (Ayla) Ely, Kayla Ely, Steve Sarratt, Annabelle Lowe, Matt Wetzel, Jakob Ely, Jamar Ely, and Josalee Ely-Parker. Her great grandchildren, Colin and Carly Anderson, Bennett and Sutton Ely. Sisters Joy (Gene) Minnick, Abilene TX. Judy Peterson, St. Cloud MN. and her brother Larry Paulson, Superior Wi.

The family would like to thank the caring and dedicated nursing staff and caregivers at Essentia Health St. Mary's Hospital in Superior. Also, a huge thank you to her niece Carol Hurry for taking such good care of her. We also want to thank her friends and neighbors at Rosewood Apartments, Mom was fortunate to have nieces and nephews that loved and cared about her. They were always there to lend a helping hand, bring by food, or just stop in to say hi and see if she needed anything. There will be a celebration of life at Bong Veterans Historical Center on September 13th, 2026. In leu of flowers please make donations to the American Lung/American Heart association.
