Mary E. Melkon, 94, lifelong resident of Superior, passed away Sept. 7, 2016 at Villa Marina Health and Rehab Center with her husband of 59 years at her side.

Mary was born on Aug. 11, 1922 in Superior to John and Mary Higgins. She graduated from Superior Cathedral High School in 1940.

She married Edward J. Melkon on March 2, 1957 and they recently celebrated 59 years of marriage. Mary and Ed made their home in Superior's East End and lived there until this year.

Prior to their marriage Mary worked for SWL&P for 15 years. Following their marriage she was employed in billing and customer service by both the East End and Mariner Clinics in Superior. After retiring in 1983 she volunteered with many organizations and was especially interested in assisting with health fairs.

Mary was a very kind soul who was always willing to donate either her time or money to help those in need.

She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church and prior to that had been a member of Cathedral of Christ the King.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, John Higgins, Thomas Higgins, Fr. Joseph Higgins and Edward Higgins.

She is survived by her husband, Ed; 9 nieces and nephews from the area and 5 from New Jersey; many great-nieces and nephews; and special friends and neighbors, Bob and Sandy Hanson.

Visitation will be on Monday Sept. 12 from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. James Tobolski as celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

If desired memorials in Mary's name may be made to the Salvation Army of Superior or to a charity of the donor's choice.
