Mavis Olson, 89, of Superior, Wis. passed away peacefully in her sleep with family by her side on Fri., Sept. 26, 2014 at St. Luke's Hospital, Duluth, Minn. in the hospice unit.
She was born May 24, 1925 in Mansfield, England to Walker and Edith (Foster) Arnold.
Mavis enjoyed her work making tins in the tin factory in England. During World War II she painted 300 pound bombs.
She came to the United States after World War II with the love of her life, her husband, Ernest. They arrived via military ship to New York and were stationed at various Air Force bases before Ernest retired to Superior.
Mavis lived many years as a homemaker and especially enjoyed baking. She was well known for her homemade bread, rolls, and cookies. She enjoyed listening to music, singing, shopping, and going out with family.
She was able to return to England to see family with her daughter and great-grandson in 1998, and kept in touch with the Royal family through the media. She had many pets over the years, which she loved dearly. She shared a special bond with both her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest; her parents; two brothers, Cid and Bill Arnold; two sisters, Alice and Edith Arnold; and a nephew, Dennis Wilkinson.
She is survived by her daughter, Carol Jones of Duluth; and a son, Neal (Trish) Olson of Superior; six grandchildren; and eleven great- grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday in the Downs Funeral Home, corner of 19th St. & Ogden Ave., and will resume at 2:00 p.m. continuing until the 3:00 p.m. memorial service on Wednesday in the funeral home with Chaplain Bob Saunders officiating.
