Mearl E. Nielsen, 92, of Superior, died Thursday, October 12, 2017, at St. Luke's Hospice in Duluth.

He was born on June 21, 1925.

Mearl served in the United States Navy during WWII.  He worked at the University of Wisconsin Superior for over 17 years and loved to go fishing.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Carla; and his siblings.

Mearl is survived by his son, George Nielsen of Superior.

His visitation will be on Wednesday, October 18, from 10:00 until the 11:00 a.m. memorial service at Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N 19 ^th Street.  Pastor Sarah Kerkes of Our Savior's Lutheran Church officiating.

Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post #435.
