Michael 'Big Mike' Sidney Anthony Almond, 53, of Superior, WI, and formerly of Brooklyn, NY, died Wednesday, May 26,2021 at his residence.
Mike was born August 19,1967 in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Cherlyn Almond and Sidney Rhodes. He attended John Dewey High School in Brooklyn.
He worked as a youth advocate, counselor, and mentor to children in need. He had a big voice and used it to speak for those who could not. He was on Brooklyn's Council for Unity, the Superior Library Board, the Parks and Recreation Commission, and was involved with Kids Safety Awareness, and with the Superior YMCA.
Mike loved his children and spending time with them. He was a big fan of the NY Mets and Dallas Cowboys, summer softball, fishing, and barbecues.
He was preceded in death by his father, his beloved maternal grandmother, Maryalice Almond, his paternal grandmother, Jane Rhodes, and his NYE brother, Darrell 'Mookie' Mouzon.
Mike is survived by his children, Samantha Almond of Superior, and Maisie, Mary, and Mia Almond of Duluth; mother, Cherlyn Almond of New York, granddaughter, Cheyenne Vogel of Superior; sister, Maryalice Almond of New York; uncles, Russell Almond of New York, Alan Almond of New Jersey, and Scott Rhodes of New York. He also leaves behind his lifelong brothers from the New York Enforcers (NYE); John Carter, Vernon Carter, Phil Curry, Shawn Daugherty, David Krol, Reggie Pryor, and Virgilio Soto.
A Celebration of Mike's Life will be held on Friday, June 4,2021 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N. 19 th Street, Superior.
