Nancy J. Grota of Superior passed away on July 12, 2026, in Twin Ports Nursing Home. Nancy was born on May 13, 1935, in South Bend, Indiana to F. H. and Vera Newport. She attended Lincoln Grade School and graduated from James Whitcomb Riley High School. She then attended Franklin College in Franklin, Indiana.

Following college, she worked for Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph in Colorado Springs, Colorado while the Air Force base was under construction. Upon returning to Indiana, she met and married James Counter of Rhinelander, Wisconsin. Following Jim’s death, Nancy the transferred to Madison, Wisconsin with the Wisconsin Department of Health and Social Services for whom she worked for over 30 years. In Madison she met Thomas Grota in 1970 and they got married in 1979.

Following her retirement from the State of Wisconsin and Tom’s retirement from Great Lakes Higher Education Corporation, they moved to Superior where Nancy was active in Catholic Daughters of the Americas, St. Francis Church Altar Society, serving as a Eucharistic minister at St. Francis, supporting Tom in his Knights of Columbus activities, and serving on the election board for the Village of Superior. She also enjoyed the trips she and Tom took camping with their travel trailer.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents and her brother. She is survived by her husband Tom.

Visitation will be held Friday, July 17, 2026, from 9:30 a.m. until the 10:30 funeral mass at St. Francis Xavier church with Fr. James Tobolski presiding. Burial will be at St. Francis Cemetery.
