Nellie Bird, 90, a lifelong Superior, Wis. resident died Sat., Nov.27, 2010 in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth, Minn.
Nellie was born July 22, 1920 to Mamie (Jaffee) and Aaron Kushner. She was a graduate of Superior Central High School.
They were in the tavern business for over sixty years having owned the Palace Bar for ten years and on December 15, 1959 they opened Les Bird's Bar. Their motto, "This bar is where ladies and gentlemen are served by ladies and gentlemen".
In the fall the bar holds a local food shelf of garden harvests. Wednesday nights the bar holds a meat raffle to benefit the Evening Lions Club and the Matthew I. Pionk Park in Oliver, Wis. The bar sponsored golf teams at Nemadji and Pattison golf courses and were also past sponsors of area bowling and baseball teams.
Nellie and Les were members of the Douglas County Tavern League and the Superior Elk's Lodge No. 403.
She is lovingly remembered by her sister, Berenice Harris of Milwaukee, Wis.; her nieces and nephews, Patricia "Pat" Cronin of Superior; Richard (Lois) Kushner of Orlando, Fla.;
Marci Holding; Kathy Sabol; and Michael and Ethan Harris; several great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces great-great-nephews; and numerous friends made while in business at this South Superior neighborhood bar.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Lester "Les" on July 17, 1995; a brother, Arthur Kushner; and two sisters, Gertrude Kessler and Sadie Salnick.
Due to Nellie's love of sports and her great dedication to the Packers, if desired, as a tribute to Nellie, it would be appropriate and appreciated for those attending her visitation and or her funeral service to wear Green Bay Packer attire.
Visitation will be Wednesday evening in the Downs Funeral Home, corner of Ogden Ave. & 19th St., from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and will resume at 10:00 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home and continue until the 11:00 a.m. service.
Active pallbearers will be Joe Denewith, Buzz Polaski, Kelly Thimm, Bob Larkin, Bubby Rasmussen, Denny Bee, Forrest Wilson and Don Lundgren.
Honorary pallbearers will be present and past employees of the bar and Todd Nelson, Bill Damkroeger, Bear Pollack, Charlie Anderson, Tom McGinnis, Pete Mencel, Rick Russom and Don Krisak .
Interment will take place at Greenwood Cemetery.
