Obituary

Peter Bedard III, age 72, of Superior, died Saturday February 28th in his residence, after a courageous fight with esophageal cancer.

He was born December 4, 1953, in Duluth, MN, the son of Janith (Johnson) and Peter Bedard, Sr. After high school he joined the United States Navy where he enjoyed seeing the world and spending time on the open sea. Peter then spent 30 years with Interlake Steamship Company, working aboard many ships including the M/V Paul R. Tregurtha. During his time with the company, he was awarded Certificates of Honor, of Merit, and the Honor Deed Award for jumping into the frigid waters and rescuing a fellow shipmate who fell overboard while the boat was being loaded at the dock during the winter months.

Pete was an avid fisherman for many years, and later in life fell in love with riding his bicycle. You could often hear him boast that up until age 70 he was putting an average of 800 miles a year on his bike. He was very proud to hear from multiple renowned doctors at Mayo Clinic how he was healthier than they are. He was deeply thoughtful, stoic, generous, and always looked out for his family. He will be truly missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his two brothers, Frank Bedard and John Johnson.

Peter is lovingly survived by his sister, Sue Hanson of Hibbing, MN; niece, Rochelle Knutson of Seattle, WA, Nicole Elysian and Heather Bedard, both of Duluth, MN; and by much of his large extended family.

Peter's Celebration of Life will be held at the Billings Park Civic Center, 3903 N 18th Street, Superior, on Monday March 23, 2026, from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm with Military Honors being accorded by the Richard I.Bong American Legion Post 435 at 2:00 pm.
