SUPERIOR
Raymond "Ray" J. Skandel, 82, a lifelong Superior, Wis. resident, died Thursday, April 15, 2010, at his residence.
He was born April 13, 1928 in Superior, son of Anthony and Rose (Pogozalski) Skandel, and resided in the gas plant area of Superior during his childhood.
Ray served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Raymond and Helen Mihalik were united in marriage on Valentines Day, February 14, 1953, and recently celebrated their 57th anniversary.
His work history included welding at the Butler Shipyard, and working many years as a welder and switchman for the LST&T Railroad and BNSF Railroad.
He was a faithful member of Holy Assumption Catholic Church. He was also a member of the V.F.W. and over a 50 year member of the U.T.U. Local No. 832.
Ray was a gifted carpenter and woodworker, having built his own home in South Superior. You could often find him in his garage/workshop working on various projects and visiting with family, neighbors and friends who would stop by his home. The fridge in his home and also in his air conditioned garage was always open to everyone. He enjoyed playing the accordion and working in his garden. He also enjoyed his train collection and was an avid Green Bay Packer fan. Ray was a devoted husband and a very kind and generous man.
Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers, Anthony and Stanley Skandel; and sisters, Stella Flesch, Angeline Gurney and Laura Osacho.
Survivors include his wife, Helen; nephews, Emil (Mary) Osacho, George (Kathy) Skandel and John (Lynn) Skandel, all of Superior; several grand-nieces and grand- nephews; and many wonderful loving neighbors and friends.
The visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until the 2:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial, Monday, April 19, 2010 at Holy Assumption Catholic Church, Superior. Reverend Father Ronald Olson will be the celebrant.
Burial will in Calvary Cemetery, Superior, where military rites will be accorded by the combined Thomas F. Stein V.F.W. Post # 1091 and the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post # 435.
Pallbearers will be Michael J. Nepper, Emil Osacho, George Skandel, John Skandel, Gary Hooker and Richard Tunell. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Stefanko, Dennis Austin, Jim Tracy and Bob Fudally.
The Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N. 19th St., Superior, is assisting the family with arrangements.
