Obituary

Richard B. "Dick" Nystrom, 80, of Superior, WI, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on October 28, 2024, following a four-year battle with cancer.

Dick was born in Ashland, WI, in 1944 to Willard and Vernette Nystrom.  His family eventually moved to Superior where he graduated from Central High School in 1962.  He went on to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of Wisconsin-Superior in 1966, and a Master of Science Degree in Accounting from the University of North Dakota-Grand Forks in 1970.  He married Ruth Ann Woods in 1968.  They built their life in Superior, WI, and celebrated 56 years of marriage together.

Dick had a strong entrepreneurial spirit and made significant contributions to his community throughout his professional career.  He was a Certified Public Accountant for over 50 years during which time he successfully owned an accounting practice, a real estate company investing in commercial properties, and Eau Claire Equipment Company that specialized in petroleum product installation.  He was an original member of the BID board established to help improve business in Superior, served on the Superior School Board from 1974-1980, and served in leadership positions of the Northwest Wisconsin Workforce Investment Board and the Douglas County Revolving Loan Fund, both dedicated to bringing jobs to Northwestern Wisconsin.  He was also a member of AICPA, WICPA, MNCPA, Elk Lodge, Masonic Lodge, Superior Development Association and Ducks Unlimited for several years.

Dick had many interests and hobbies.  He was an avid football fan and liked to share memories of his time spent playing at UW-Superior, and cheering for the Badgers and Green Bay Packers.  For several years he looked forward to the very competitive Nystrom/Manion volleyball tournaments at the family cabins.  He enjoyed spending time hunting, fishing and socializing with friends in addition to completing many group construction projects in a timely manner.  His most cherished activities were with his family, whether it be helping his daughters with school projects, vacationing, cabin time, or passing down wisdom to his grandchildren.  In his later years he enjoyed Florida's warm weather, playing 18 and entertaining guests.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, infant son Bryan, brother-in-law William "Bill" Manion, and son-in-law David Defries.  He is survived by his wife Ruth, and his children Stacy (Pat Jungers) Nystrom, Leslie (Paul Berg) Defries, Kristy (Mike) Jelen, and grandchildren, Sam, Nate, Matthew, Anna, Gabe and Drew.  He is also survived by his sister Barbara Manion, along with nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to Dr. Anthony Wiseman, the Oncology department and all the caregivers at Essentia hospitals and clinics who cared for him.  Additionally, Jean, Brandon and Pastor Darrell of the hospice team who provided exceptional care and comfort at the end of his life.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday Nov. 9th from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. service at Downs Life Celebration Center, 1902 N 34th St, Superior, WI, with Rev. Darrell Kyle as officiant.  Private family burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
