Obituary

Richard H. “Butch” Tappen, 78, passed away Sunday, September 27, 2026, at Essentia St. Mary’s Medical Center.

Butch was born October 4, 1947, in Superior, Wisconsin, to Kathleen (Gillespie) and Milton Tappen.

He graduated from Superior Central High School in 1965 and enlisted in the U.S. Army. Butch made two trips to Vietnam with the 82nd Airborne Division. He was highly decorated for his unselfish commitment to his platoon, receiving two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star for his dedication and bravery.

Butch continued to keep in touch with his longtime Army friends, traveling to visit one another over the years. He was employed as a machinist for the DM&IR Railroad for many years until his retirement and was a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Lodge #672.

Butch enjoyed traveling to Laughlin, Nevada, and visiting his Army friends in North Carolina and Alabama. He especially enjoyed attending NASCAR races in Talladega. Butch always seemed to own a classic car, with one of his favorites being a ’31 Ford he affectionately called “Plum Crazy.” He was also a regular at Jack’s Place, where he enjoyed catching up with friends and keeping up with the latest games. Butch also looked forward to hunting and fishing with his buddies in the Wascott area over the years.

Butch was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Ron.

Butch is survived by his son, Ronnie Tappen; stepson, Jason (Andrea) Moreau; half-brother, Robie Little; and his beloved dog, Millie.

A private graveside service will be held on Friday, October 23, 2026, at Greenwood Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post #435 Honor Guard.

A Celebration of Life will continue from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, October 23, 2026, at the Vintage Italian Pizza, 1201 Tower Ave, Superior, WI.
