Richard A. Johnson, 79, lifelong resident of Superior, died Tuesday, June 1, 2021, at Essentia-St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth.

Richard was born in Superior on April 15, 1942, the son of Albin Johnson and Shirley (Mohr Johnson) LaMarche.

Richard lived with his Challenge Center family for many years. He had an insatiable curiosity, asking questions most people wouldn't dare ask.  He was keenly aware of the hierarchy of local and national government; knowing who was "the boss" so issues could be reported.  Richard loved talking about construction projects, businesses moving to town and people in general.  He participated in Special Olympics and took trips whenever he could.

Richard developed long lasting friendship with many of his friends and caregivers and was loved by everyone.  In his later years, he was comfortable expressing his softer side and developed a love of teddy bears.  He collected many of them, especially panda bears.  The bears had names, birthdays and extensive wardrobes.  His bears accompanied him everywhere.

He is survived by his siblings, Christy Drayer, Mary Jo Dalphonso, Gardner (Terry) LaMarche, Charles (Patricia) LaMarche, Michelle (George) Stella, and Julia DeRosso; and many nieces and nephews.

Richard is preceded in death by his girlfriend of many years, Connie Luckenbill and his dear friend Linda Anderson.

Visitation will be held on Monday, June 7 ^th from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. funeral service at First Evangelical Covenant Church, 3311 Hammond Ave., Superior. Pastors Clyde Harvey and Steve Staurseth will officiate.
