Obituary

Robert Joseph Baranow died peacefully, April 1, at home, in the loving embrace of his family.

He was born June 1935 in Chicago, Illinois to Ralph and Eva (Cedzo) Baranow. The family moved to Washburn, Wisconsin when Bob was 11.

At 14, he entered St. Francis Seminary in Milwaukee, and was ordained to the priesthood May 1, 1961. Bob loved and served both Catholic and Lutheran communities of faith. Over the years, his ministry extended as well to people of many different faith traditions and experiences. Bob always considered these encounters a privilege.

He married Virginia Route, with whom he had three daughters, Elizabeth (Mark), Alyxandra (Tim), and Laura (Brian). His granddaughter, Kaya, was his special joy.

Over the years, Bob was involved in Boy Scouting and Girl Scouting. He began Sea Scout troops in Hudson, Wisconsin, and helped them build a boat to navigate the Mississippi River. Bob also owned and enjoyed operating Holicraft Trophy Company for over forty years. He will be deeply missed by many including all who were entertained and challenged by his letters to the editor.

He is survived by two brothers, Ralph (Irene) of Anchorage, Alaska and Tom (Mary) of Ashland, Wisconsin, mother-in-law, Kaya Route and brother-in-law, Jack (Deb) Route, both of Frederic, Wisconsin, sister-in-law, Joan Route of Pine City, brothers-in-law, Bob (Holly) Route of Balsam Lake and Bill (Karin) Route of Washburn, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, May 1 at 1:30 pm at Downs Funeral Home, Superior. All are welcome.
