Roy Melvin
Harju
September 10, 1941 – April 26, 2022
Roy Melvin Harju, 80, of Superior, died Tuesday, April 26, 2022, at Solvay Hospice House in Duluth.
He was born September 10, 1941, son of John and Helen Harju in Pelkie, Michigan.
On October 16, 1961, Roy Harju and Marvis MacKenzie were united in marriage, in Superior, WI.
For 43 years he worked for the Soo Line Railroad, retiring as yard master, and known by all as "The Flying Finn."
His memberships included the Moose Club and U.T.U.
He treasured his family gatherings playing board games and yard games and his most famous response was, "Shiiiit." Roy attended his grandsons' sports events and learned the love of golf from them. Roy had never golfed before his grandsons taught him the game…and he was hooked. It was not uncommon for him to golf 5 days a week and 45 holes per day! He was a fan of the Packers, Brewers, and the Badgers. He had a great sense of humor and always told the truth, whether you wanted to hear it or not.
He was preceded in death by his son, Tod; and sister-in-law, Gail Reamer.
Survivors include his wife, Marvis; son, Rod, Superior; daughter, Wendy and RJ Kotter, Duluth; grandsons, Max and Liz Kotter, Hermantown and Nate and Mary Kotter, of Duluth, and best golf buddy, Larry Abbott of Superior.
Private services will be held at a later date.
