Obituary

Russell "Russ" C. Wester, 84, of Superior, died Saturday, February 15, 2025, surrounded by his family at Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.

He was born February 18, 1940, in Superior, son of Myrtle (Fenton) and Russell K. Wester.

On April 12, 1980, at South Range Presbyterian Church, Russell Wester and Maureen VanBuskirk were united in marriage.

Russ was an investment broker and assistant manager at Paine Webber & Co. in Duluth for many years.

Some of his interests included fishing, boating, hunting – especially his trips to South Dakota, Isle Royale, and Canada, trapshooting, traveling, cheering for the Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Brewers, and spending time at his cabin. His greatest interest was spending time with his family and friends.

He was a member of the Superior Elks Lodge #403, Ducks Unlimited, Isle Royale Boaters Association, Superior and Hawthorne Trap Shooting Clubs, and the Western Lake Superior Trollers Association.

Preceding him in death were his parents; mother-in-law, Barbara VanBuskirk; and several aunts and uncles.

He is survived by his wife of over 44 years, Maureen; daughters, Jackie (Brad) Johnson, Two Harbors, MN, and Jennifer (Derek) Kynell, Otsego, MN; son, Russ (Kris) Wester, Hermantown, MN; grandchildren, Hannah (Cole) Martin, Sam (Elise Yeager) Johnson, Sophie Kynell, and Erin Wester; and brother, Jim (Sandy) Wester, Superior; father-in-law, Clyde VanBuskirk; sisters-in-law, Ann Martineau and Babette Specht; brother-in-law, Craig (Pauline) VanBuskirk; and many nieces and nephews.

The visitation will be from 10 until the 11:00 a.m. service Monday, February 24, 2025, at the Downs Life Celebration Center, 1902 N. 34th Street, Superior. Gary Banker will be the officiant.

The pallbearers will be Derek Kynell, Sam Johnson, Cole Martin, Brad Johnson, Ron Krause and Dennis Aho.

The burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Superior.

Everyone is invited back to the life celebration center for a luncheon.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to St. Jude's, Douglas County Humane Society, or the Superior Salvation Army.

The family wishes to thank the Superior Fire Department and the Mayo Clinic Ambulance staff for their excellent care of Russ.
