Ruth G. Scharte, 91, lifelong resident of Superior, died Monday, January 20, 2020 surrounded by her loving family at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth.
Ruth was born on June 11, 1928 the daughter of Flora (Willoughby) and John Melin. She graduated from Superior Central High School with the class of 1946.
She married Arthur J. Scharte in May of 1953 and they celebrated 56 years of marriage before his passing in 2009.
Ruth worked at Glass Block prior to her marriage and raised 5 children. She was also the bookkeeper for their rental business and Scharte and Son flooring. She has been a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church since the 1950's and all of her children were confirmed there.
She was a member of the YMCA for many years. She had a great group of friends through the Y and they would meet for coffee and also play Farkle and Dominos weekly. She was also an avid reader and enjoyed crossword puzzles.
Although soft spoken, Ruth was a very strong woman whose family was most important to her, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Art; sons, Michael Scharte and Tom Potter; brothers, Bud and John; sister, Elsie; and great-grandson, Andrew Potter.
Ruth is survived by her children, Tim (Kerry) Scharte of Superior, Nancy (Scott) Misfeldt of Kohler, WI Chris (Tina) Scharte of Superior, and Jeff (Erin) Scharte of Superior; daughter-in-law, Lynn Scharte; grandchildren, Lindsay (Matt), Patrick (Nicole), Brooke (Ben), John, Joel (Ashley), Elizabeth (Justin), Neal (Jaclyn), James, Molly, Eiley, Andrew, Thomas (Erin), Abraham (Caroline), and Sonia (Paul); great-grandchildren, Isaiah, Natalie, Caleb, Sarai, Sophie, Miles, Keegan, Bryce, Jaxon, Camden, Elliott, Arianna, and Parker; a sister, Katherine Sweeney; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be on Friday, Jan. 24 from 9:30 a.m. until the 11:30 a.m. funeral service at Pilgrim Lutheran Church. Rev. Will Mowchan will officiate. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be her grandchildren.
If desired, memorials in Ruth's name may be made to the Salvation Army, Solid Rock Mission, or a charity of donor's choice.
