Obituary

Sally Leigh Jewson was born in Superior on January 10, 1932 and died December 29, 2015.

Sally graduated from Cathedral High School in 1950, Sally received her Bachelor's Degree in 1954 from Mount Mary College, Milwaukee and her Master's degree in 1962 from the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Sally taught English at the secondary level in several states: Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and California. She was a member of the Cathedral of Christ the King and the Superior Area Retired Educator's Association.

Special friends were a vital and important part of Sally's life. It was her desire that these friends be acknowledged for their care and support. She said "My friends know who they are."

Proceeding Sally in death were her brother; Bart L Jewson, M. D. in 1962; her parents Frank B. Jewson in 1991 and Margaret (Peggy) Jewson in 1993. Her family were her many friends.

There's more to Sally Leigh Jewson than she was born, educated, worked and died. Sally was a caring and creative teacher and a steadfast friend who kept in touch through the years by sending lovely cards or joining friends at a dinner table. An 8th grade student in California, Diane Strong, has been writing to her for 56 years up to the week Sally died. Sally loved art and had a collection of originals. She loved the birds in her back yard and tended the little flower garden her father and mother had left behind at her childhood home next door to the college. She decorated with the seasons and kept an immaculate home that she had lived in since she was six years old. Her darling Teddy bear collection was special to her. Sally did not have children of her own, but she loved the neighborhood children and their children, the Mikels and the Baileys. Her financial adviser Kathi Beasley became her good and loyal friend. Christmas dinners were spent around Ron and Peggy Orlandi's dinner table. David and Teri Leibforth and Dean and Terri Neumann shared many a laugh. In 1992, she retired from the School District of Superior, leaving many friends and students behind from Central Junior High School. When the ceiling of her classroom collapsed in the 1980's, she was not at work because she was caring for her sick parents that day. It happened 5 minutes after the last bell, and if she was at work, she would have been in the room when the ceiling flattened everything below it. After retirement she started another letter to a new friend who helped her retire, Monica Tikkanen. Sally shared her friends and stories with Monica, who also grew to love Sally for all her cleverness, good advice and a listening ear. When troubles trouble you, Sally would just say, "It's just air in your air." Yet she herself was a worry-wart. If she wanted to let you know that something wasn't a big deal, she'd say "Whoop-dee-do" and laugh. Always being well prepared and organized, Sally asked Monica to take over her affairs when the time came. Sally made sure everything was in order. She moved to the Lighthouse of Superior in 2011 where she kept a lovely apartment and made new friends.

Sally's life was forever changed in 1962 when her brother Bart tragically died two weeks before his graduation from the Marquette Medical. When she was able she established a perpetual scholarship in his name at the Medical College. In 2013, Sally honored her beloved family when she established the Frank, Margaret, Bart and Sally Jewson Scholarship Fund at the Superior Scholarship Foundation in Superior. Her father Frank was a well known WITC educator, public employee and citizen of Superior. Her mother was a teacher before Sally was born, and Sally and her brother were both committed to higher educational goals. Sally also valued the work of three other groups in the area and has left a gift to each: The Boys and Girls Club, The Duluth Symphony, and the Fairlawn Museum. Memorials may be made to any of these groups or a charity of your own choice in her name. Her personal representative is Monica Tikkanen of Superior should friends wish to communicate about Sally.

Sally will be missed by those who loved her, and she will be appreciated by those students and groups who receive scholarships or gifts from her, as she leaves a legacy behind in a quiet way. Thank you to her students, friends, colleagues, and the Superior Community for providing a place for Sally to live, to work, and to give back. She had a good life and she was lots of fun.
