Shawn G.
Moodie
December 16, 1952 – May 13, 2020
Shawn Graham Moodie passed away on May 13, 2020. He was born in Superior on December 16, 1952, the third son of Douglas and Norrie (Maloney) Moodie. He was survived by siblings Dr. Douglas (Cheryl) Moodie, Michael (Aileen) Moodie, Mary Moodie Brown and Robert (Ellen) Moodie. As a youth, Shawn enjoyed trampolines, riding a tandem bike, eating fast, basketball, doing jigsaw puzzles (turned upside down) and most of all, spending vacations in Solon Springs on the water. Swimming came naturally to him, regardless of the water temperature.
Shawn was a kind and gentle man. He was loved by his siblings, friends and family. Shawn had an electric smile and he always made those around him feel special. He was diagnosed with autism at a time when people really did not know what autism was. His diagnosis led his parents to become vocal advocates for children with disabilities and special needs. Shawn's mother wrote the Curriculum first utilized by the State of Wisconsin in teaching and assisting special needs students. Shawn and others were the first students in Superior to receive specialized education directed towards their disabilities. Shawn's parents were founding members of the Douglas County Association for Retarded Citizens, now known as ARC Wisconsin. Both Shawn's mother and sister spent over thirty years providing teaching help and assistance to those students in need of specialized education.
Despite being non-verbal his entire life, Shawn was a highly effective communicator and he understood everything in his environment. He touched the lives of many with whom he lived and worked in various group homes and care facilities in the EauClaire area. Shawn was the perfect example that a man's spirit is what matters most. Shawn's spirit will live forever.
There will be a private family burial at Calvary Cemetery. Shawn will be buried next to his parents. A Celebration of Shawn's Life will take place at a time and place to be determined.
