Shirley D. Nelson, 89, of Superior, died Monday, October 3, 2016 at Superior Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
She was born on August 28, 1927, the daughter of Bert and Mabel Erickson.
Shirley married Wallace A. Nelson on February 24, 1945 in Duluth and they spent 71 years of marriage together.
She was a school bus driver for the Superior School District.
Shirley was an avid stock car racer and started racing on the ice of local lakes. She set time trial records in both Proctor and Superior during her years of dirt track racing.
She enjoyed doing arts and crafts, especially oil and acrylic painting. Carpentry was another skill of hers, helping Wallace build their home together. Hunting and fishing were other interests of hers.
Preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Kenneth and Gene Erickson.
Survived by her husband, Wallace; daughters, Dawn Nelson and Char Morrow, both of Superior; sons, Wally (LaVerna) Nelson of Cloquet, Rocky (Sharon) Nelson of Waunakee, WI, and Andy (Kathy) Nelson of Superior; sister, Sandy VanDell of Duluth; 9 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. The family would like to give a special thanks to everyone at Superior Rehabilitation and Nursing Center for their loving care of Shirley.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
