Thomas 'Tom'
B. Hilger
December 22, 1938 – December 14, 2022
Thomas Benson Hilger, 83, of Superior, passed away peacefully with his son Robert at his side on Wednesday, December 14, 2022.
He was born on December 22, 1938, in Superior to Joseph and Mamie (Benson) Hilger.
Tom was a lifelong resident of Superior. He grew up in the north end and graduated from Central High School. Soon after he enlisted in the US Army and served his country honorably.
Tom married Judy Marie Soyring on Sept. 3, 1965, and together raised 3 children.
Tom worked for US Steel and retired after 30 years of service in 1993.
Tom was a devoted Husband, Father, Grandpa and Great Grandpa who always planned ahead and made sure everyone was provided for. He was also very practical. He'd rather receive a can of tuna for a Christmas gift then another bottle of cologne he wouldn't use.
Tom also enjoyed telling stories as his family and many friends at the Superior YMCA well know. Sadly, Tom had to say goodbye to those friends at the "Y" who he also considered his family.
Tom's last 2 months were spent at "The Cottage" a few footsteps away from his daughter and son-in-law's home in Brule, WI. It was at the cottage where family let him know how much he was loved, listened to his stories, and cared for his every need as best they could. He also kept his incredible sense of humor and optimism throughout his courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Tom will truly be missed by all who knew him.
Tom is survived by his son, Robert Hilger of Robbinsdale, MN; daughter, Linda (Tom) Humphris of Brule, WI; granddaughters, Macie (Andy) Erickson, Malia Hilger, Shea, Sofie and Seija Harvey; great grandchildren, Emma and Easton Erickson; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Judy; daughter, Beth; brothers, Donald and Michael; sister, Judy; and nephew, William Hilger.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 7 th from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. service at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 1924 Wyoming Ave., Superior. Pastor Sean Koos will officiate.
Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery with military honors at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Superior Douglas County Family YMCA.
