Thomas Allen
Kurtz
August 3, 1945 – March 6, 2025
Thomas A. Kurtz, 79, of Superior, passed away on Thursday, March 6, 2025, at Aspirus St. Luke's in Duluth.
Born on August 3, 1945, in Superior, Tom was the son of Laverne and Erwin Kurtz. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy until his honorable discharge.
In 1965, in Superior, WI, he married the love of his life, Mary Lou Koenig. Together, they built a life centered on family, hard work, and community.
Tom worked tirelessly, holding two jobs for most of his life. He dedicated years of service to Superior Water, Light and Power and the Chicago and North Western Railway. Beyond that, he used his considerable design and building talents to take on many construction projects. Later, he and his son, Tom Jr., co-owned Builder's Saloon and Boardroom.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Laverne and Erwin Kurtz; his beloved wife, Mary Lou; great-granddaughter, Hailey Eastman; and younger brother, Dan.
Left to cherish his memory are his sons, Thomas B. Kurtz and Gerald A. Kurtz, both of Superior; grandchildren, Amanda (Nick) Eastman, Travis Kurtz, Brayden Kurtz, and Masen Kurtz; and great-granddaughter, Hannah Eastman.
Tom was the fifth of eleven children. He grew up in Allouez alongside his older sisters, Nancy, Karen, and Judy; older brother, George; and younger siblings, Bonnie, Ed, Dan, Ken, Mary, and Lori.
Tom was a guiding force—strong in body, spirit, and heart. A proud veteran, a devoted father and grandfather, and a steadfast friend, he was always willing to lend a helping hand. His kindness, resilience, quiet wisdom, and yes, even his cantankerous personality, left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
He did so many things behind the scenes, assisting law enforcement, those in need. On doorsteps throughout the city, he left his mark of caring. Quietly, as he did most things. Without fanfare or need for recognition. Tom was a go-to guy.
He was the strongest man we ever knew—not just in strength, but in grit, caring, and generosity. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
A visitation for close friends and family will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. service on Thursday, March 13, 2025, at Downs Life Celebration Center, 1902 N. 34th Street, Superior, with Reverend Father Andrew Ricci officiating.
Following the service, beginning at noon, the family invites everyone to celebrate Tom's life at Builder's Saloon and Boardroom.
