Thomas James McGinnis, 64, lifelong resident of Superior, died unexpectedly Wednesday November 2, 2011 at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth.
Tom was born in Superior on Sept. 17, 1947 the son of James B. and Doris L. McGinnis.
He was a 1966 graduate of Superior Senior High School and shortly thereafter he was drafted into Navy serving his country during the Vietnam War.
Tom married Debbie L. Stark on Nov. 8, 1975 and would have celebrated 36 years of marriage.
He was employed by the BNSF Railroad as a Relief Foreman, retiring in 2005 after 31 years. During the 80's, while laid off from the railroad, he bartended at his dad's bar, Jimmy's Saloon in Billings Park and also for the Old Town in East End and Les Bird's in South Superior.
Tom enjoyed bowling, having bowled on several leagues back in the 70's and 80's; he loved to golf and golfed on several leagues throughout his life most recently at Nemadji and Pattison Park golf courses. He was an avid Wisconsin Badgers and Green Bay Packer Fan. Most important to Tom was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother David McGinnis.
Tom is survived by his wife, Debbie; his two daughters, Kelly McGinnis of Little Chute, Wis., and Jaime (Robert) McMeekin of Superior; grandchildren, Makayla Thomas and Taylor Olivia McMeekin; a sister, Nancy (John) Larson of Bloomington, Minn.; two brothers, Michael (Sandra) McGinnis and James McGinnis both of Superior; nieces and nephews, Michaela (David) Ward of Northbrook, Ill., Andrew Larson of Savage, Minn., Nicole (Joey) Parker of Superior and Stephen McGinnis of Superior; and a great-nephew, Matthew Ward.
His visitation will be held on Friday, Nov. 4, from 5-7p.m. and continue on Saturday, Nov. 5 from 12:30 to the 1:30 pm. funeral service in the Downs Funeral Home, corner of 19th St. and Ogden Ave. in Superior.Fr. William Murphy will officiate. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post #435.
Active Pallbearers will be, Robert Callery, Dennis Bee, Dennis Sears, James Haworth, Anthony Stark, and Andrew Larson. Honorary Pallbearers will be, William Martinson, Marshall Hanson, Stan Protokowicz, Matthew Stark, Grant Miller and Stephen McGinnis.
