Thomas Lafayette Whitney 83, of Hermantown formerly of Iron River and Superior died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, Sept 17, 2011 in Chris Jensen Health & Rehabilitation Center in Duluth.
He was born November 16, 1927 in Lima Ill. to Bertha and Clyde Whitney. The last of four children. As a child he lived in Cloverland Mn and Duluth Mn. He was a 1944 graduate of Denfield High school. After graduation he joined the U.S.Navy in January 1945. He became a radarman on a CVC96 and was in Tokoyo Bay for the signing of the Peace treaty. He was then stationed on Bikini Island for the atomic bomb testing.
He married Victoria Mattson on March 27, 1948 in Duluth. He then moved to Superior where he spent most of his life.
Tom worked for the Great Northern / Burlington Northern as a Carmen for 38 years. He also worked at Westmans auto body shop. He was a member and Elder at Itasca Presbyterian Church. A member of the V.F.W. of Iron River where he enjoyed working as a bartender at the club. He also enjoyed reading, traveling and sports. Tom coached hockey and worked with the Superior Amature Hockey Association for over 15 years. He really enjoyed going fishing with his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents Clyde and Bertha, his brother and sister in law, James and Norma his sister and brother in law and Virginia and Richard Kucinski
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years Victoria, his children Bonnie (Gary) Carlson, Bruce (Sally) Whitney, Reed (Jenna) Whitney, and Colleen (Wade) Stewart; nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren; and a sister Jessie (Bert) Westman.
Visitation will be from 1:00 until the 2:00 funeral service on Wednesday in the Downs Funeral Home 19th& Ogden with Rev. H. Duane Aslyn officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery where Military Rites will be accorded by Richard I Bong post honor guard. A fellowship will be held after at United Presbyterian Church 229 N 28th St.
Pallbearers will be Ronald Bredow, Tim Glanville, Justin Phipps, Josh Halligan, Jamie Avery and Donald Bredow.
