May 31, 1941 – June 21, 2019
Tom H. Wright, 78, passed peacefully on Friday, June 21, 2019 at St. Luke's Hospice in Duluth after a long battle with cancer.
Tom was born in Superior on May 31, 1941 the son of Vern and Lorraine Wright. He graduated from Superior Central High School with the class of 1959 and was a member of the 1958 and 1959 State Championship Football teams with the Superior Central Vikings.
He had owned local bars including, Sports Page, Cedar Lounge, and Champions. He then went on to sail on the Great Lakes for over 20 years for the Oglebay Norton Shipping Company.
He was a member of the Superior Curling Club. He was a member of the Bud Somerville Team of 1965 who were the 1 st Americans to win the World Curling Championships. He was also a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Duluth and the Eagles Lodge in Superior. In retirement, he enjoyed going to flea markets and selling various wares and sweatshirts. Tom was an avid sports fan, especially football and baseball. He loved the Packers and the Twins. He also enjoyed going to Stock Car races.
Tom attended Duluth City council meeting for many years. He was active in the Republican Party and served as the delegate to the Republican Caucus in Minnesota. He loved talking politics and called into local radio talk shows as, "Tom from Morgan Park."
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Tom is survived by his wife of 38 years, Darlene; step-daughters, Karen (Bryan) Brandt and Kristine Miernicki both of Duluth; sisters, Caren (Al) Gagne of Superior and Jane (Jack) Krisak of Florida; nieces and nephews, Carrie (Monk) Baylis, Scott (Jordan) Krisak, and John (Jenn) Gagne; and many cousins.
Visitation will be on Wednesday June 26 from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 funeral service at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 9503 Grand Ave., Duluth. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery Superior.
The family would like to give a special thank you to the staff at River Hill Assisted Living, Dr. LaMaster, and the staff of St. Luke's Oncology & Hospice for their loving care of Tom.
