Victoria M. Whitney, 85, a resident of Hermantown, Minn. since 2009, died Tues., June 2, 2015 in her residence.
She was born December 23, 1929 in Escanaba, Mich. to Josephine (Thoma) and Carl Mattson. On March 27, 1948 in Duluth, Minn. she and Thomas L. Whitney were united in marriage.
Victoria had worked at the former Marshalwells in Duluth and when they moved to Superior, Wis. she found employment at the former Franklin Elementary School.
Victoria loved to go fishing and camping with her family. She also enjoyed working puzzles, playing bingo, knitting, doing craft projects, gardening, traveling, and watching sports; especially hockey when her son was playing.
She was a member of the former Itasca Presbyterian Church and was active in their Margarite Guild. She then became a member of the United Presbyterian Church.
Victoria is lovingly remembered by her children, Bonnie (Gary) Carlson of Hermantown, Bruce (Sally) Whitney of Baldwin, Mich., Reed (Jenna) Whitney of Superior, and Colleen (Wade) Stewart of Two Harbors, Minn.; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson; two siblings, Violet (Pete) Collegnon and Matt (Mary) Mattson all of Mayville, Wis.; a sister-in-law, Jessie (Bert) Westman of Superior; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas on September 17, 2011; brothers, Carl and Willard Mattson; sisters, Irene Johnson, Lillian Carlson, Virginia and LaVina Swanson, Isabel Anderson, and Helen Noel.
Visitation will begin at Noon on Fri., June 5th in the Downs Funeral Home, corner of Ogden Ave. & 19th St., and continue until the 1:00 p.m. funeral service with Pastor James Joseph officiating. Committal prayers will be held at Greenwood Cemetery.
