Everson
November 14, 1922 – October 8, 2020
Virgil M. Everson, D.D.S., 97, known to many as "Doc Everson," passed into Eternal Life on Thursday October 8, 2020 at his residence.
Virgil was born on the family farm in Highland, WI, the son of Albert and Nora (Adams) Everson. He graduated from Lone Rock, WI, High School in 1940 and enrolled at Superior State Teachers College (UWS).
While there, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps and as a recruit attended two semesters at Gustavus Adolphus College before reporting to boot camp at Parris Island in 1944. He served in the 2 nd Battalion, 24 th Regiment, 8th Marine Division in Hawaii on the island of Maui. His division participated in the invasion of Iwo Jima and he obtained the rank of 1 st Lieutenant. After the war he joined the Army Reserve and attended Marquette University where he graduated with his dental degree. In 1950, as part of the Medical Service Corps his unit, the 2 nd Engineer Special Brigade, was activated to go to Korea. While in Korea he participated in the invasion of Inchon. He was discharged on February 11, 1962 holding the rank of Captain.
He married Virginia J. Walters in 1947 and they celebrated 67 years of marriage until her passing in 2014.
Doc Everson was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, the American Dental Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, longtime member of the former St. Paul's Lutheran Church. FEX Fraternity at UWS, MN State Myasthenia Gravis Association, and was a Boy Scouts and Cub Scout Volunteer. He also served on the Board of Directors of Superior Savings Bank for over 50 years.
He loved to have fun with people and was known as a walking historian of Superior. He was a part of a coffee clutch that met for over 70 years at Mathers, the Board of Trade, Bachand's and Julie's. He also enjoyed Tuesday morning breakfast with Ron Underdale and Jason Young.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Virginia.
Virgil is survived by his children, Terry (Pam) Everson of Madison, Tim (Mary) Everson of Spokane, WA, Nancy (Greg) McGarry of Lake Geneva, and twins, Douglas (Carolyn) Everson of Montclair, NJ, and David (Patti) Everson of Superior; 13 grandchildren, Scott, Nicole, Neil, Christine, Melissa, Michael, Ryan, Jason, Eric, Kevin, Andrew, and twins, Kennedy and Taylor; 17 great-grandchildren; a half-brother, Sonny Everson; many nieces and nephews; special friends, Linda and Lyle Jensen, and Connie Purinton; and his comfort dog, Chase.
Due to COVID-19 and capacity restrictions, a private family service will be held at Our Savior's Lutheran Church with Rev. Sean Koos as officiant. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery Veteran's Memorial Park with military honors accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post #435.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Our Savior's Lutheran Church Building fund or the Virgil M. Everson Scholarship Fund at UW- Superior.
