Warren J. Winslow, 88, of Superior died peacefully Friday morning at St. Luke's Hospice Care in Duluth.
He was born March 17, 1927 in Rochester, MN to Harold and Bertrice (Goodfellow) Winslow and was a resident of Superior for most of his life.
He was married to Ethel Walters on April 23, 1949.
Warren is survived by his son, Robert Winslow and friend Ginger Godin of Minneapolis, grandsons David Winslow of Bloomington, MN and Drs. Andrew and Laura Winslow of Louisville, KY, as well as many nieces, nephews and close friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife and soulmate Ethel, their son, Daniel, his brothers, Richard and Robert Winslow and his sister Jean Dodge.
Warren served in the Navy in WWII from May of 1945 to August of 1946 and was honorably discharged as a Carpenter's Mate Third Class. He jokingly called himself 'a wood carpenter on a metal ship'.
Warren and Ethel lived their married life at homes in Billings Park, the University area, and East End of Superior. Their coffee pot was always on and friends and relatives were always welcome. Their home was full of love. Warren continued to live at his home in East End until his recent hospitalization. He looked forward every year to tending to his begonias – his son will do the same.
He was a fireman for the City of Superior from 1951 until his retirement in 1983, serving as a driver, a captain and a city inspector. 24 hours on followed by 48 hours off allowed Warren to form lifelong friendships with other firefighters – especially his friend of 50 years, Lenny Rouse. He loved his job and the people he worked with. After retirement when the grandsons visited and were introduced to grandpa's friends, they would always ask 'is that another fireman?' The answer was usually yes.
Fishing and hunting were his passions – passions that he fully developed in his 48 hours away from work. Whether it was deer hunting in the fall with both rifle and bow or ice fishing in Canada or on Lake Superior, Warren was a patient sportsman with a respect for the outdoors.
A Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 13 in Our Savior's Lutheran Church with Pastor Sarah Kerkes officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. A procession to Greenwood cemetery will immediately follow the service, where Warren and Ethel will be laid to rest. A luncheon at Our Savior's Lutheran Church will follow.
If friends desire, donations can be written to the Superior Firefighters Association or Our Savior's Lutheran Church.
