Obituary

SUPERIOR

William E. Gambeski, 92, of Superior, died Saturday, October 31, 2009 at Golden Living Center, Superior.

He was born April 10, 1917 in Superior, son of Josephine (Karwoska) and Boleslaw Golembieski.

Bill was employed by Bethlehem Steel in Chicago and was recruited in the US Army in 1941 from Chicago, Illinois. He served in the 1st Infantry Division of the US Army for four years. Bill served in three sea invasions: North Africa, Sicily and Europe, including the invasion of Omaha Beach at Normandy. The Purple Heart and the Bronze Star were awarded to him plus numerous other awards, medals and ribbons. Bill also played accordion with the Army dance band. He received an honorable discharge in 1945, having served the entire war.

When Bill returned to Superior, he and Lorraine O'Connell were united in marriage at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, on November 6, 1946.

For over 40 years, Bill was employed as a printer by The Evening Telegram, Superior.

Bill and Lorraine formed a dance band known as, "The Bill G Combo". They entertained around the Duluth/Superior area for many years.

Some of his memberships included the Elks Club (25 year member), V.F.W., American Legion, C.W.A. # 204, and the Superior Musicians Union.

Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers, John, Al, Stanley and Joseph; and sister, Katherine Miller.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Lorraine; daughter, Sheree (Robert) Christian, Superior; grandchildren, Alyssa Christian, Honolulu, Hawaii, and Tyler Christian, Madison, Wisconsin; sister, Helen Ranta, San Diego, California; and several nieces and nephews.

The visitation will be from 11 until the noon Mass of Christian Burial at Cathedral of Christ the King, Superior, on Monday, November 16, 2009. Reverend Father Andrew Ricci will be the celebrant.

Following the luncheon in Kress Hall (lower level of Cathedral of Christ the King), a private inurnment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Superior, where military rites will be accorded by the combined Thomas F. Stein V.F.W. Post # 847 and the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post # 435.

Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N. 19th Street, Superior, is assisting the family with arrangements.
